Your options around the theatre
There is no hotel at the archaeological site itself. Realistically you choose between:
- Argos (40 min) — central Argolid base, full services, free parking, best rates.
- Palaia Epidavros (15 min) — seaside village, lovely in July, limited outside the season.
- Nafplio (30 min) — the most popular option and the most expensive; parking after a show is genuinely difficult.
- Ligourio (5 min) — the closest village, practical but quiet and small.
Going to a performance at the Ancient Theatre
Performances at the Athens & Epidaurus Festival usually start around 21:00. Arrive an hour early: the approach road backs up, and you want time to walk the theatre while there is still light.
Bring a cushion or hire one at the entrance — the seats are ancient marble. Nights are cool even in August, so take a light layer. From Argos the drive back takes about 40 minutes on quiet roads.
Combining Epidaurus with the rest of the Argolid
From Argos you can see Epidaurus in the morning, swim on the Argolic Gulf in the afternoon and be back on the square for dinner. Mycenae, Nafplio, the Ancient Theatre of Argos and the wineries of Nemea are all within 40 minutes of the hotel door.
Staying at Palladion Boutique Hotel
Ten rooms on the central square of Argos, certified Greek Breakfast, 24-hour self check-in for late returns from the theatre, and staff who will happily print your route and tell you where to park at Epidaurus.
Frequently asked questions
- How far is Epidaurus from Argos?
- About 50 km, roughly 40 minutes by car on good roads via Nafplio or the inland route through Ligourio.
- Where should I sleep after a performance at Epidaurus?
- Anywhere within an hour is comfortable. Argos is 40 minutes away, has free parking and a 24-hour self check-in, so a late return after a show is easy.
- Can I visit Epidaurus and Mycenae in the same day?
- Yes, from Argos. Mycenae in the morning (20 minutes), lunch back in town, Epidaurus in the afternoon (40 minutes). Both sites close in the early evening outside festival nights.
