The four realistic options
Travellers usually compare four bases for Mycenae. Each one works, but they solve different problems.
- Argos (20 min) — a working Greek town with a central square, tavernas, bakeries, supermarkets and free street parking. Closest full-service base, and by far the best value.
- Mycenae village / Fichti (5 min) — a handful of small guesthouses beside the site. Convenient for a single early visit, very quiet in the evening.
- Nafplio (35 min) — beautiful and touristic, with higher rates, paid parking and heavy summer traffic on the way out.
- Nemea (30 min) — wine country. Lovely for a vineyard night, but you will be driving for everything else.
Why Argos works best for most itineraries
Argos sits in the middle of the Argolid plain, so almost everything is a short drive: Mycenae 20 minutes, Nafplio 12 minutes, Epidaurus 40 minutes, Nemea 30 minutes, the beaches of the Argolic Gulf 20 minutes. You unpack once and see the whole region without changing hotels.
It is also the only base where you eat where locals eat. Dinner on the central square costs a fraction of Nafplio's old town, and the town keeps its rhythm all year — not only in August.
Staying at Palladion Boutique Hotel
Palladion is a small, family-run boutique hotel of ten rooms directly on the central square of Argos. Certified Greek Breakfast with Argolid produce, 24-hour self check-in, free WiFi, air conditioning, rain showers and illy espresso in every room.
Ask us at breakfast and we will tell you exactly which gate to enter at Mycenae, where to park and which taverna to stop at on the way back.

Frequently asked questions
- How far is Ancient Mycenae from Argos?
- About 20 km, roughly a 20-minute drive on the old national road via Fichti. It is the closest town with hotels, restaurants and services.
- Is it better to stay in Argos or in Mycenae village?
- Mycenae village is closer, but has very few services. Argos gives you the same early start with restaurants, shops and a real town in the evening — and it is central for Nafplio, Epidaurus and Nemea too.
- Can you visit Mycenae without a car?
- Yes. There are local KTEL buses from Argos towards Mycenae, and taxis take about 20 minutes. A car is still the most flexible option if you want to add Nemea or Epidaurus the same day.
